it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
From my years of teaching, I found that when students are working with manipulatives, math starts to make sense.
My current students view Algebra 1 as abstract; it doesn't make sense and is just a bunch of rules. We are still in the early state of class so they are not comfortable with talking and working with each other.
My school is fairly new and we are constantly trying to find more ways to accommodate the various learners we have in class. We are on block scheduling and having more resources for my tactile learners will greatly help time past for them and make it more enjoyable.
My Project
In my class, students have been reviewing concepts from pre-algebra. They are finding it boring and hard. Anything is hard when it's different and only written. By having some algebra tiles, students can practice combining like-terms with variables! Multiplying polynomials will also make sense. Student engagement and differentiation will be so easier with these manipulatives. My students who need more of my attention can have additional support!
With your help, my students will no longer be restricted to writing math but instead will be playing with it!
My students will be learning the "why's" of math and they won't even realize it! This will be a great start to a more hands-on math year.
