My Students

Most of my students come to class without having calculators. As a high school math teacher, this makes it very difficult to explore the harder equations in math class. I have purchased a few calculators, but I have 30-35 students in my class and it is difficult to effectively share the few calculators that we have.

My school is in a rural district which traditionally has not performed well on standardized math tests.

We are trying to restructure our math curriculum to help students better understand the math concepts in class. I also teach some of the core classes where the kids may be unable to complete some of the arithmetic by hand, so calculators are very important.

My Project

The calculators that I have requested will be used every day to complete class and homework. I teach both Algebra I and Geometry, and we will use many of the calculators' scientific buttons. Many of my Algebra students have difficulty performing earlier skills such as converting decimals to fractions in a timely manor. In geometry, for example, we will use them to calculate sine, cosine, and tangent.

Currently we are restricted in how much material we can cover in class because we are wasting time sharing calculators.
