Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 & 10-year-old kids who need resources to truly excel! My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras" (supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc.) that can make a significant positive impact. Many of my students have had traumatic backgrounds, have learned English as a second language (ESL), or have families that struggle to simply put food on the table. Despite these challenges, they thrive when given the right opportunities and my intention is to make those opportunities happen!
My Project
My students have come to expect that our classroom is always going to be a place of fun and discovery. As the classroom teacher I do my best to always have videos, apps, and hands-on activities to ensure high engagement. I want to bring an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, and Echo Buttons into my classroom take advantage of the many Alexa Skills available now. Alexa Skills include simple things like checking spelling and math computations to more complex things like translating words and phrases for my ESL students and giving directions in small group centers. With the Echo Buttons, students will be able to play games during indoor recess. One of the games available is Simon which encourages students to see, and recall patterns - a critical math foundation skill. Playing games also encourages students to practice social skills like taking turns, team cooperation, and winning (and losing) graciously. These are just a few examples of how this technology will be of benefit to my students. I can't wait explore all of the amazing things Alexa has to offer!
