Our school is located in New York, near Yankee Stadium. The students in our school come from many different cultural backgrounds and diverse learning styles. My students have me for mathematics for 100 minutes daily. During this time we go beyond just learning an algorithm; my students are engaged in mathematical discussion within student groups and whole class discussion which focuses on mathematical reasoning.
These 5th graders are amazing as they daily persevere as mathematicians.
My students demonstrate this with collaboration within student groups as they support each other's learning during a lesson. They have learned to support each other with the use of manipulatives and models which allows access for all learners!
My Project
Having the ability to print is vital to our classroom community. Throughout each unit, my students spend a vast amount of time persevering through rigorous tasks to demonstrate how they are growing as learners. One tool that my students find beneficial is is having anchor charts displayed throughout our room. Anchor charts serve as a reference for students when they are completing tasks throughout the course of the day. Students having anchor charts in color allows them to clearly see the progression of the concepts that we are studying. For example, students would be able to clearly see how the size of two shaded areas are equivalent and aid them in formulating a written response to why the parts are equivalent as well.
Additionally, my students love learning from their peers!
Student work is scanned and displayed in my classroom during our gallery walks. My students spend a period of time analyzing strategies used by their peers to answer a question and how the strategy connects back to the story. Students then commit to trying the strategy the next time they complete a task! My students are filled with a sense of pride when their work is displayed in our classroom allowing their peers to grow as learners.
Finally, I am a strong believer in the home to school connection, thus building a bridge connecting my classroom to the families of my students! I frequently send home newsletters to parents explaining the concepts that the children will be learning about in class. Furthermore, parents enjoy receiving resources allowing them to learn along with their child as well as supporting them. Having these resources printed in color makes a world of a difference!
