Alert! Listen to Reading in Danger at Hamlin Kindergarten!
My students need 10 iPod Shuffles (if possible in 4/5 different colors) to participate in our Listen to Reading in Daily 5 Literacy Block in our kindergarten classroom!
"What does a fluent reader sound like?" The Daily 5- Listen to Reading segment was designed to teach children just that. But, what do you do when your computers are taken away, your CD players don't work and you don't have enough volunteers to read to the kids on a daily basis?
We are a public neighborhood school, grades K-5.
Our kindergarten students are diverse in age (between 4 and 6 years old), ability, ethnicity, social/economic background, special needs and more! Any given year there may be seven different languages spoken (some who come in speaking no English at all), children without one or more natural parent, MANY children receiving free lunch, MANY children with Autism, learning disabilities or physical handicaps. Yet, we always become a family, supporting each other, welcoming their families into our classroom and celebrating the individuality of each and every student!
My Project
Last year we began implementing the Daily 5 routine into our Literacy Block. One of the segments, called "Listen to Reading" allows children to listen to fluent readers reading quality books. Listening to this will help them to understand how important phrasing, tone, expression, etc. are in becoming a great reader! Through the year we struggled to keep this piece in place due to outdated technology, broken hardware, difficulty using CD players for little ones, and more. This year we were told we are losing our desktop computers and they will not be replaced, which limits our "Listen to Reading" to the old CD player with multiple headsets. If we are not able to obtain the 10 iPod Shuffles, which I have heard from other teachers are the PERFECT tool for Daily 5, we may not be able to do this piece at all. This tool will make it easy for the kids to hear the literature and develop some independence in using the tools. We need iPod Shuffles!!!
I can't tell you how important this is for our youngest learners!
They need to be read to often, many of their parents don't speak English so they cannot do it at home. Even more of them come from single parent homes whose parents often do not have time or the energy to ready every day to them. I am sure you have heard that children who are read to, become readers! And as I tell my children every day, the more you read, the better you get! So please, help out our students by donating!
