Dear donor, I am currently the Reading Lab teacher at I.S. 125 (Henry Hudson Middle School) in Bronx, New York. I teach a wonderful group of inner city students who really have benefited and enjoyed coming to my lab. I run a very interactive and educational reading fluency program in my lab called Quick Reads that has really helped my students to become better readers by focusing on their reading comprehension and fluency. Last year my students did not want to come to my lab during the last two months of school because of the extreme heat in the classroom.
I am located on one of the top floors of the building and I have thirty-three computers running in the lab without an air conditioner- so you can just imagine how uncomfortable it was for the students to focus on their work under these conditions. The sun also hits the side of the building where I am located all day, which makes my computer lab feel like an oven. The shades also do not block out enough of the sun to control the heat and humidity of the room. The windows also do not open all the way, and when they are open pigeons fly into the room (you can just imagine how long it takes to get them out and the mess they make- NOT GOOD). The problem is that the students cannot work well under these conditions and they lose their focus because of the heat issue.
My lab has helped all my students increase their reading skills and because of this my principal has decided to create three Science labs, a Writing lab, one Math lab, and is also keeping my Reading lab open for the coming school year. Due to budget cuts my principal could not afford air conditioners for all these labs. We need 3 air conditioners with a high number of BTUs because the labs are rather large in size and need powerful air conditioners to cool off the entire lab. We will take whatever anyone is willing to give us even if it is just one or two. The students and teachers of our school would be very appreciative because a large percentage of the school will be using these labs. There is nothing worse than having to teach and learn in a hot classroom. There are so many other barriers to learning that teachers and students are faced with in the public schools that we do not need to add on to them by not being able to provide comfortable classrooms for our students. I have been teaching for 5 years now and I love my job and students. My students deserve a comfortable classroom and I will not stop until I can provide that for them.
