This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I often say that my students go through rougher situations in life than I have ever gone through or probably will go through. Many of my past students have fathers in jail, witnessed shootings, have been forcefully separated from family members, have lived in homeless shelters, and more.
However, so many of these students, despite their broken lives at home, come to school with so much life and energy.
They have dynamic personalities, incredible sense of humor, and a deep care and love for those around them. They WANT a structured environment, deep relationships, and fruitful learning experience.
My Project
First graders are still new to being in a space with 20+ others. One big thing I aim to teach to my students is how to keep their space and the classroom organized and efficient. Many of the tools that are in the shopping cart will be just what we need to make this happen! Since students work best with physical materials and manipulatives, there are always so many things that need to be stored neatly in the classroom. The bins and storage containers will help us to maximize the space in the classroom to make sure all the materials are accessible to the students. Some materials I've requested are to enhance learning by giving students hands-on tools to experiment within the classroom as well!
