My students need new novels, such as Paper Towns,The Dork Diaries, and Graphic Novels, to replace the tired and worn out books in my current classroom.
"The more that you read, the more things you know," by Dr. Seuss, is one of my favorite quotes! This quote connects well with my current project. Students that read for enjoyment build a healthy relationship with books, which can transpire into a positive attitude towards learning in the classroom!
Thanks to the implementation of the International Baccalaureate program at Eastwood Middle School, I work with students that are independent and know how to drive their own learning.
Eastwood is a learning community comprised of students from varying ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Due to the IB program students are able to develop an open-mind, appreciating their own personal history as well as the values and traditions of others. As a teacher at Eastwood Middle School, I have the privilege to work with 135 different students each week! Each student has a unique learning style and a vastly different personality, which makes every day a new opportunity to make an educational break through.
My Project
Research shows a classroom library can help a student attain reading achievement. By building a new library, I can provide my students with a wide variety of novels. These books, such as Harry Potter and Divergent, will allow children to access texts that are meaningful and personally interesting. As a teacher, it is my job to incorporate the diversity of books into a student learning environment and provide a wide variety of genres, authors, and topics. By granting access to a well-developed classroom library, I will be able to promote a greater amounts of reading and increased reading frequency. This can help students achieve greater levels of reading achievement. Finally, a good teacher will know the reading levels of students and reading levels of the books in their classroom library, so that they can match their students to texts that can be read with success. This will help in assisting students to grow as readers.
A classroom library is a welcoming space where students can read and browse through a vast collection of novels.
A well-developed library can promote literary instruction, help students learn about books, provide opportunities for independent reading, and serve as a place for students to talk about and interact with books. All of these things will promote a positive learning environment and give students a chance to develop a love for books and reading.
