Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a small urban public school which serves a mix of students of families with a long history in this community as a well as a growing population of newcomers who have varying degrees of English and school experience. We have a large population of English Language Learners and over 95% of our students qualify for free lunch. Most of my incoming class of second-graders have been in the same class together since Kindergarten. They are well-connected to one another and often interact like siblings.
My students are engaged, interactive learners and are constantly learning to build relationships with others.
The community which surrounds our school is impoverished and often unsafe. School is an escape from these unfortunate circumstances. With such a mix of students who are new, permanent, or in-between, we give special attention to growing our classroom community and strive to be a welcoming place for all. My students have big hearts and crave to be connected with one another at school.
My Project
My students need headphones to remove distractions and focus on learning during computer time. At my school, our students have limited access to basic technology, mainly Chromebook computers. Students share a cart of about 30 computers among several different classes, serving sometimes upwards of 80 children.
Since we have to share the computers, it would be helpful for students to have accompanying headphones for individual use.
In the past, our school has supplied earbuds to students, but they became entangled, lost, or otherwise broken, especially with the younger students. I have also asked students to bring in their own headphones, to which only a handful of students respond. Therefore, at computer time, during individual reading or math learning games, students have to work at a very low volume unless they have their own headphones. The sounds from books being read, buttons being pushed, game noises, etc, become a distraction to the class.
With a class set of headphones, students can peacefully work without distractions from their neighbors. If they can hear their books being read, they can practice fluency and pronunciation. They would also be more engaged with their Math concept games without bothering to check how their classmate is progressing. They could also use it while typing stories or poems for extra concentration. These headphones will help us maximize our limited time with the computers and likely yield better academic growth!
