My kindergarten students are five and six years of age and just beginning their school careers. Our school is a public magnet school that teaches over 600 students and specializes in integrating the arts, design and creativity. That means a school day packed with many hands-on activities that the students choose from and often complete with a partner. Our school is truly a colorful and creative environment where children excel in academics and love attending. Because of our approach to teaching, we have students attending from all around our city, as well as our school's neighborhood. This makes us a very diverse group of learners with various backgrounds, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
My students are eager to learn and look forward to application time when they choose a partner, their activity, and their work space.
I love watching my students develop both their social and academic skills while working through an activity. I am proud of how quickly we become a community of learners who care about each other, work together to complete assignments, and try to do their best.
My Project
While my students love choosing their activities and partners they are most excited about choosing where they want to work. Comfortable and stable seating allows students to get right down to work and eliminates the many accidents caused when traditional chairs topple over under wiggly students seeking comfort.
Donations to this project would buy ottomans which will provide students with a stable and comfortable seating option at three different locations around our classroom.
The chairs I currently have tip over easily and are just too big for the smaller students. I have found that the two unique chairs I currently have in my classroom are always the first chosen and I hope to provide more seating options for my students. Once the students are comfortable, they can accomplish great things.
