My students range from kindergarten students to 3rd graders who are struggling to become readers and writers. In our rural community, many of the students come from low-income families and have not had opportunities to always see the importance of reading in their everyday lives.
I want my students to see reading as an adventure that can help them discover the world, meet new friends, and experience the joy of learning through books.
Also, I want to provide a platform for them to share their own experiences through writing as they master the art of telling a story, sharing their personal knowledge, and recognize that their words can change the world.
Being an avid reader and writer myself who comes from a rural background, I know how vital it is to help my students see the value of becoming a confident and enthusiastic reader and writer. As my students hone their skills and experience the joy of becoming avid readers and writers they'll discover there is a global world waiting for them.
My Project
When decoding words in text is a challenge, it can drastically affect students' comprehension. The struggling readers I work with in small groups need high-interest passages and stories from a wide variety of genres to hone these skills.
I want each student to feel the excitement and satisfaction that comes from experiencing those 'aha' moments as they read.
These materials will help me provide opportunities for my students to improve not only their reading and fluency skills, but also their comprehension skills.
Reading comprehension skills increase the pleasure and effectiveness of reading. Strong reading comprehension skills help in other subjects areas also and ultimately in my students' success as learners.
