Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is filled with learning and imagination. We work on reading, writing, math, handwriting, social studies etc. every day. We teach our students what they need to learn and more importantly to love learning. As a special education teacher, in an Inclusive Co-Teaching setting (in which both general education students and special education students learn side by side) in East Harlem, it is my job to provide opportunities for all students to learn in different ways to meet their diverse learning needs. It is important that my instruction includes audio, visual, and kinesthetic aspects enabling all students to access information.
Inclusion is not simply about proximity, it is about intentionally planning for the success for all students.
In addition to having an integrated community of learners, we also consider the socioeconomic status and cultures in our classroom community when creating our classroom environment and implementing lessons. Our students are mainly Hispanic and African-American, inner-city children that range in level of education as well as ranging in language exposure. Some of our students come from newly immigrated parents who speak very little English.
My Project
In an inclusion co-taught (ICT) class (a class containing students with Special Education services as well as General Education), our class is made of diverse students with a variety of needs (academically, behaviorally, socially and physically). Each student is different and therefore learns differently. So, as a Special Education Teacher, I want to be able to create a classroom that meets these diverse learning needs enabling all of my students to reach new goals. By incorporating different types of seating and work stations students will have a better opportunity to find a work style that meets their needs. This will also provide more choice for students, enabling them to take charge of their learning and develop independence as they see what classroom tools help them to be successful.
Differentiated seating options and work stations will help meet the diverse needs of the variety of learners in my classroom.
Many kids have trouble sitting for a long period of time or prefer a specific position to help them be productive. Providing different options can help them become more comfortable, focused and productive, as well as build their confidence and stamina in the classroom. For example the portable lap desk might help a kid who struggles to stay seated at his/her table during writers workshop, enabling him/her to find a better spot on the floor where they can get started in a different space. The stools provide many options, whether it is an extra spot at a teacher table or an other seat to pull up next to a buddy. The mobility and size of the stool helps to create many more seating options around the room. The Go Anywhere chair create a new and exciting spot for a reader, no matter the level, to get comfortable reading a new book!
