What do the Apollo theater, a Honda Odyssey, and a bottle of Ajax have in common? They are all allusions to Greek Mythology! Hundreds of years later Greek Mythology is still all around us; It appears in literature, music, products, and even our constellations.
My students are energetic, spirited, and passionate about learning.
Our school has over 1200 students yet still maintains to have the second highest report card for middle schools in the state. Because our school is a standard driven school, our students work extremely hard throughout the year. Then, once state testing is over teachers are allowed more freedom in the curriculum to teach what the students are really passionate about. This year, we did a small lesson on Mythology by introducing the students to the story of King Midas. After that story my students were hooked on Mythology.
My Project
My students are fascinated with Mythology. They are inspired to learn everything they can about it. I would love to share more than what is in their textbook, however, there are just not enough resources for every teacher to be able to choose his or her own novel set. Which is why I am requesting a class set of D' Aulaire's Book of Greek Mythology. Through this book they can see the connection Ancient Greek Mythology has to the modern world. Through the many activities and projects we will complete using this book, I believe that the students will start to grasp the concepts of literature and geography being more than just what is happening "now". It will give them a glimpse to see how something that happened thousands of years ago can impact their lives today. Thus, improving their chances to becoming a life long learners, which, as an educator is my ultimate goal.
By your donation to my class you will be helping students bridge the gaps between Ancient history and modern civilization.
Give a student an "Ah-Ha" moment when they see something on T.V. and realize for the first time, "Hey! We learned about that in school!" It is my to teach my students real world knowledge to promote their passion for learning well after they leave my classroom.
