Calypso, Samba, Merengue, Muntuno, Reggae - the beat goes on and on in our Steel Pan Orchestra Classes. There's something about hitting that steel and hearing it resonate that just seems to enthrall my music students at CDA High. When these young teens get a chance to perform, they just feel so proud and all their hard work pays off, and they really shine. Sheet music for Steel Pan Orchestra is very hard to find, but modern technology has once again come up with the answer. There is a peice of software that can listen to any song, convert it into a full arrangement for the orchestra, and then (this is the fun part) print out a complete score for the conductor and parts for every player. It sounds like magic I know, but there's more. The students can tap or even sing a melody into the microphone and guess what. The computer will add harmonies and rhythms to their original melodies and print out a whole new creation that the whole band can enjoy playing. In fact, it's the students who kind of dragged me into looking at this software. They saw it in action in the movie "Drum Line" and they've been after me to get it ever since. A lot of my colleagues have been oo-ing and ah-ing over this for a while, and now that I've had a chance to try it out I can see why it has become standard in the industry as well as in education. Another great feature of this package is its ability to scan a peice of music into the computer so that it can then be edited. Your gift will provide this software and a collection of arrangements for use by CDA General Music, Steel Pan, and Band classes. The students will learn tons about music, but most of all they will be motivated by new sounds, new songs, new arrangements, and the chance to hear their own ideas performed. On behalf of my students, thank you.
