I am a first year teacher, working at a small charter school. While I have managed to put together a good amount of supplies and resources for the classroom, with the school being smaller supplies are limited. This has been a hard year for all of education. The charter school is smaller and the students, parents, and staff are grateful to have the opportunity to be in person. There are extra precautions being taken and new ways of engaging students are being explored.
My students are 100% free and reduced lunches.
They live in a rural area, where technology is not overly abundant. The charter school is a back to the basics philosophy, but looking to make the leap into STEM/STEAM. The students love learning about how things work and trying to puzzle things out. I want to give them the opportunity to be able to work with their hands and problem solve and create.
The students deserve to have adequate resources, to help them keep progressing in their education and curiosity. I want to make sure that my students are continuing to be challenged and that they are growing their skillsets.
My Project
The students have been working really hard at learning their letters and we are just starting to learn and form words. We are starting to use our white boards a lot in doing this. However the white boards we have are rather old and do not erase very well at all. They are also starting to come apart and have really just exceeded their expected life span. We are also in need of a class set of trays to use for crafts and when we get stuck inside for recess, so the students have a way to contain their craft or materials. The magnifying glasses also will be a great addition as spring is around the corner and we are just starting a STEAM program at our school. This will allow students to get a close up look at things we collect on our nature walks!
