Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low-income apartments. One hundred percent of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a second language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
Every year it seems our state's education funding is slashed, yet our standards and expectations for the children go up and up. As a new teacher, I arrived to 25 babies and an empty classroom. I have big ideas but a low budget.
In this day and age, Kindergarten students are expected to be able to read and write sentences.
It ain't like it used to be when we were kids. I am asking for alphabet, phonetic, and word stamps for students to use in art centers to experiment with writing. Play dough will be used to develop muscles in hands necessary for long-term writing. The puppets will be used to read stories and have fun and exciting teaching moments with a buddy. The word and letter dice and activities will be used by students during centers while the teacher provides instruction to small groups.
Thank you for your interest in my project and I appreciate your help.
