This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of the students that walk through the door of my classroom have spent the majority of their lives living in a different country and speaking a different language. Many of them had very little formal education in their home countries and are beginning their educational lives as middle school students.

This experience can be incredibly scary and overwhelming for students who are trying to communicate and learn in a language that is brand new to them.

I have been blessed this year with small classes made up exclusively of English language learners, most of whom come from Spanish-speaking homes. My class is the one time during the day that my students are surrounded by other English language learners and are more comfortable working intensively on building their English skills.

My Project

This year, my English Language Learners are VERY new to the language. I desperately need books that are designed for early readers but are not "baby books" that will make my older kids embarrassed. After a lot of research, I found what appears to be the perfect match for my students: the Saddleback Emerging Readers Library. This set combines high-interest, age-appropriate topics with sight words and sentence structures that my student will be able to read and comprehend independently. This set will provide my students and me with the resources we need to work together to increase their English knowledge.
