My students need access to an equipped chemistry lab so they can complete assigned labs and makeup labs if they are absent.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in the heart of the city drawing from varying neighborhoods. The students in my Ag Chemistry class are second and third year members in the agriculture program planning to attend college. This course meets the UC and CSU chemistry lab science college entrance requirement.
My students should have access to the same resources as students in other chemistry classes; with our current borrowing strategy, absent students cannot make them up in my lab.
With the purchase of basic starter equipment last year we were off to a good start. We are still in need of the listed items for conducting experiments to help students better understand chemistry. Hands on labs reinforces learning. With over 85% of our school on free and reduced meals, attendance is not always consistent for some of our students unfortunately as they care for siblings at home while parents work. Having access to labs for them to make it up at any time is critical to their success as the likelihood of them going to another teacher’s lab to make it up is very unlikely.
My Project
The lab is located on the opposite side of campus from the science department. While not new to offering this course, I am in my third year of teaching it and trying to build our equipment inventory for our 8 lab stations. I teach 3 different subjects during the day (floral design, Ag Chemistry, and Ag Econ/Ag Govt). To be more efficient with my time and continue to provide better curriculum for my students it would be great to have equipment in my lab rather than having to acquire and transport the science department’s equipment back and forth every time there is a lab. We typically do our labs after the other classes are done. Sometimes the timing works well and other times we work in other agricultural curriculum. Our own equipment would provide more flexibility and greater benefit for the students.
