Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a mix of diverse learners and general education students. As a school, we're trying to include as many students as possible in the general education environment while still providing instruction in a smaller setting. To achieve that, teachers and students are collaborating across environments. We are located on the west side of Chicago and my students love learning and experiencing new things, especially when they feel it is a unique experience to our room.
Building responsibility and confidence makes a huge difference for my students.
We have rotations for math and reading to practice different skills and to build independence. It is difficult for my students at the beginning of the year, but by December, they can usually work for a full 30 minutes without teacher intervention during their independent work time.
Including my students as leaders in social-emotional and gaming situations has allowed them to be leaders and depend on positive behaviors for attention.
My Project
Part of our after school programming is intramural sports. I run the group with third and fourth graders. Many of the students wanted to practice basketball and soccer skills before playing and we did not have enough materials for students to partner up with balls.
The addition of several soccer balls and basketballs will give more students the opportunity to participate in their sport of choice.
Spalding NBA Tack Soft Official Basketballs and Select Club Soccer Balls are products that are durable enough to last for years. The addition of these materials will also allow group work with skills beyond partner and individual work.
