After School Snacks Push Us to Grade Level!

My Students

I teach mathematics to an amazing group of 158 diverse seventh graders at an urban school where the majority (70%) of our students receive reduced or free lunch.

As a teaching team of five teachers, we strive to hold our students to very high standards.

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to help our students be successful, especially in math and reading. Our students are children that are either advanced students, general education students, or special education students, and many are English Language Learners.

My Project

Our teaching team has come together to tutor our middle school students after school in efforts to get them on grade level in both math and reading two days a week. We again have 158 students, and over half are deficient in either reading or math or both subjects. We invite all our students that are below grade level to stay after and work on a computer program, Compass Odyssey, to improve their skill set. The computer program works with each child at their own level and pushes them on an individual learning path towards grade level.

After school, we find the kids are hungry and in need of a snack to keep them focused.

We have had as many as 36 students stay after school and it can be rather expensive to supply snacks twice a week for approximately 20 weeks. So, we are asking for crackers and cookies so these students can stay focused during this after school club.
