This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Welcome to my classroom. We're struggling readers, debaters, and writers with various disabilities, ages 12-16. We also have classmates who've immigrated to America and are learning English.
We're in a Title I district, with most of our students on free and reduced lunch.
A snack during tutoring makes a big difference when trying to finish their work. Some pocket the snack in case they won't have dinner, sad but true.
Our school strives to inspire our students. As students achieve with their reading and math skills, their self-confidence increases. We encourage learners to put in their best effort, and persevere. This means staying after for tutoring and clubs like debate and writing.
My Project
One of the best grants that our district ever received, provided snacks for after school tutoring. Unfortunately, that grant stopped being offered several years ago. More students stayed after when they received a snack and a milk because they were hungry. The betterment of their grades was productive; hunger was their motivator.
Snacks help teens focus during afternoon tutoring.
My mom always made sure I had a snack when I got home. Life isn't like that for the majority of my students. Many are "food insecure;" that's social work jargon meaning that they're not sure what or when they'll eat when they go home. When snacks are available, tutoring attendance increases 40%. Learners stay, working while they eat, because they can focus.
All of the cereals that I've requested for snacks, I've observed the students eat at our subsidized breakfast--without milk. The providers also meet our "no nut" allergy standards.
Once upon a time, I provided snacks. The needs outpaced my personal budget. Donors like you, helped me meet this need last year. The supplies requested will last approximately three months for my tutoring students. Tutoring, debate and writing clubs begin in September.
If you're interested in additional projects that meet essential needs for our students (weekend food and hygiene), please look at the projects organized by Mrs. E, our social worker.
