We are located in a high poverty area where parents work long hours, and we also have many retired and active duty military families. Many of our students are not exposed to team sports or physical activity outside of the school setting because of parent work schedules.
Our school does not offer any after-school team sports options, and many of our students are learning about different athletic games during our PE time.
I want to be able to give my students the best physical education opportunities no matter our location. With funds low, it has been many years since we have gotten new sports equipment for our students to use.
My Project
I am helping with an after school art club. This year the interest is so great, that the art teacher needs my help. Our students love to paint. They love to make artwork to decorate our school's walls. Seeing their artwork displayed throughout the building gives them a sense of ownership. It makes them want to keep the building clean and looking it's best.
We are requesting card stock, watercolor cakes, tempera sticks, tempera paints, and paintbrushes to help them create their masterpieces.
Students feel great pride when seeing their artwork on display.
I always hear student's remark at how much fun they are having when they are doing a painting project. They are thrilled to see the water change colors when cleaning their paint brush. They experiment with creating new colors and will say, "Wow, I just made the colors of the sunset!" Using tempera cakes is an easy way to allow our student's to paint more often. They dry quickly, and are easy to distribute and to clean up.
