My Students

Music classes should be offered to all students, no matter color, creed, or ability. I believe that music education can make a difference in the lives of all students. My students recently have seen their school district written about negatively in the local news media, I want this project to help us come together in this challenging time.

Help me support diversity in the music classroom with a chromatic xylophone dedicated to African culture and music.

Xylophone is a popular instrument in elementary music classes. At the middle and high school, we offer marimba for marching band. I want this new instrument to be used just in the study of music of Africa, which has its own rich xylophone musical tradition. I want students to hear and play music that is reflective of who they are and expose others to it.

My Project

These African xylophone instruments exist in many different forms and with lots of names. They can be found in all parts of Africa. Actually, it is even one of the most prominent ethnic musical instruments on the continent.

At first, African xylophone music may sound unusual to a Western ear, because the African scales and techniques are different from what we are used to.

But it is worth diving into this marvelous world. After all, Western xylophone history includes these African ancestors.

My students are curious about the world and want to hear and play music that is more reflective of themselves, so i am requesting the African xylophone instruments.
