PS/IS 41 is an inner-city school whose predominantly single-parent families have a median income of less than $23,000. Our Arts Coordinator has developed an intensive arts-based program over the last 7 years that has transformed this poor performing school into a highly respected arts-centered school, one that other districts and schools are trying to emulate. Along the way, reading and math scores have rebounded. Student skills are showcased in a year end production with full costuming. 115 of our 3rd Graders have been receiving instruction in Djembe and Conga drumming and will be showcasing their skills as part of our year-end show. This year's show, “Jamaican Me Crazy”, is a student-written play based on a student-written Caribbean/African story written last year. To augment visual arts curriculum components (such as Making Connections), we'd like to have the students make their own tie-dyed t-shirts. At the same time they will make the cultural connection to the play and the music as they learn about this technique's historical African roots.
