This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I school in North Carolina and many of my students are at risk of academic failure. This is many of my students' first time in a school setting. The early learners in my class are more interested in the process of discovering and manipulating materials than the final products of their experiments.
Learning experiences are meaningful and relevant for every child and reflect his or her developmental, cultural, and individual circumstances.
My students love to move and be active. However, because of recent budget cuts, we are unable to purchase additional resources such as the ones requested.
My Project
Young students should have opportunities to learn about their culture. All about the people and paths forged which enable us all to enjoy certain freedoms. This month I have started to share the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through traditional African American music and spoken word will assist students in "seeing" history.
I want to provide opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities that introduce them to varied and diverse experiences.
I've selected many books about African American heritage. My students would greatly benefit from books that teach them about kindness, compassion, perseverance and confidence. Books like "Happy in Our Skin", "ABC I Love Me", and Brown Boy Brown Boy What Can You Be?" will give my students more understanding of their culture.
