Help me give my students a variety of fiction and non-fiction, such as Hidden Figures and Young, Gifted and Black, that have African Americans as the star(s) of the book.
The four walls of my classroom contain twenty fifth graders, two lizards and lots of love. During our days, we read together, laugh together, and yes, even cry together. I take them on travels to the past, watch them work collaboratively to solve scientific challenges, high five them when they have solved that math problem and read about their experiences in life through their writing.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, and although many of these backgrounds differ from mine, I make every effort to meet them where they are.
My students are loved and I make it my goal to tell them I love them each day, because for some of them that is the only time they hear it.
My Project
Twenty beautiful African American faces stare back at me each day, and I wonder what difference I can make in their lives. I see most of them struggling or hating to read, because I do not have books they can relate to on a personal level. I need authors like Walter Dean Myers to line my bookshelves to increase interest.
By providing my students books with African Americans as the star, you are providing them the opportunity to not only increase their reading level, but also to develop a lifelong love for reading!
