This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write and learn!

My students are excited to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am working to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, especially during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.

My Project

As I read through our adopted literacy program, there is the assumption that my students are familiar with Mother Goose tales, fairy tales, folk tales, and nursery rhymes. Many of my students have not had the luxury of being told these stories or read these rhymes. Many of my students have not had any schooling before entering Kindergarten. They have not had stories read to them or rhymes chanted, or folktales told to them. My students need that foundation in literature to help them learn to read. To help my students adapt and learn with our literacy program, I am hoping to build a library of rhymes, poems, fables, and tales.

Mother Goose Tales and Aesop's Fables are beautiful short stories and poems that will help my students build a foundation for reading and writing.

I want to have access to all of these tales and more so that I can enrich my students with these stories that it is assumed they already know. By teaching them fairy tales and fables, my students will learn lessons about humanity and morals. They will hear creative storytelling with animals and people that will help them to see good in the world and learn lessons through stories. By providing them with Mother Goose poems and nursery rhymes, they will learn how to rhyme and read words. We will use these stories to build a foundation for reading and writing in our class. This collection of short stories and poems will be an amazing addition to our daily routine in the classroom. Every day, we will add to our knowledge of stories and tales.
