Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
B. International High School/Newcomers Academy welcomes recent immigrants and English Language Learners new to Boston. In the halls of BINCA you'll hear Haitian Creole, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Chinese and Portugese, and more . . .
Our students are success stories.
Although faced with a myriad of challenges in their lives, such as trauma, homelessness, having to work to pay rent, adjusting to a new language and culture, and other responsibilities that are emotionally demanding, they find a way to persist. BINCA has sent many students to a wide range of colleges and other exciting post-secondary opportunities like Americorps. We are proud of the sense of community we've created within the walls of our school, and the academic and social lessons our students take with them when they graduate.
My Project
BINcA is starting a bi-weekly Advisory meeting. Every staff member in the building will have a small group of 6-10 students to connect with twice a week. Our goal is to foster relationships and provide preventative social-emotional learning.
Advisory is uncharted territory!!
Teachers and students need resources that will help start conversations, that will inspire collaboration, creativity, and connectedness.
We are hoping you'll help us obtain and test out question games and card decks about mindfulnes, gratitude, and even yoga (gasp!). We need markers and chart paper to create art representing this special group we're creating. We need books that help teachers understand our students on a social and emotional level, not just an academic level! All of the materials for this project will go towards building a safe, supportive space for our students who live complicated lives. This is new for us, but we know it will be wonderful.
