Our 6th grade class is comprised of approximately 130 excited learners! We live in a small, rural community with a large percentage of students on the free and reduced price lunch program. Even with low economic backgrounds, these students come to school eager to learn, and excited to have opportunities to read and write in my classroom. Our school is extremely outdated, so it’s important to me to make our classroom inviting so that our awesome kids will want to come to school and learn every day!
My Project
I am teaching an adventure based writing course next quarter! The purpose of the elective will be to dive into new activities with a notebook in hand. ABW will integrate fiction and nonfiction writing, and it will motivate students to write with imagination, curiosity, and a hunger to learn about new places/topics. We will improve our writing skills through the daily practice of responding to our adventures in journals and longer essays. Due to the unpredictable weather in our community, a hardcover notebook that is somewhat weather resistent is needed. Also, a nice notebook will encourage pride in their writing!
