This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a trauma-informed community that practices mindfulness amidst staff, students, and curriculum. We integrate the arts in all of our school subjects because we believe the arts enhance learning. The arts also gives us an opportunity to ensure culturally responsive pedagogy for our students. They get to make choices as to how they present what they learn, thus experiencing joy in their education. I joined this community a few years ago witnessing the magic that goes on here during school observations. At the time, I thought I had to be there. It was a flexible place focusing on the innovation our schools need to move forward in this century. Now, I am working with 5th-grade students that can't get creation out of their minds! From singing, to poetry, to painting, to coloring, to building, they are constantly asking to create. I couldn't be happier to fulfill these requests as we dive deep into the inner workings of our world.
My Project
I have carefully selected these books to be culturally responsive, as well as highly engaging and tailored to the specific interests of my students. Currently, our classroom library lacks titles like these as I am just beginning. I want to get my students excited about reading, through literature that is exciting, interesting, and connected. I believe that I am dealing with Generation X as a teacher, and that is the digital generation.
They have grown up in a world where they can capture information in quick bits online, and it is a more complex process in present time to engage students in long-term reading.
Having current and rich literature for 21st-century students is a must!
