Help me give my students a brand new experience with a ladder, party wall background, and cutouts. I want my students to feel the excitement of traveling through reading as soon as they walk through the door.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an exceptional Title I school with exceptional students. Their motivation to push themselves to gain as much knowledge as possible is inspiring. We are a small town in Louisiana. Like most schools, we feel the struggle of not having the funds that could help get our students to the next level, boost their interests, and keep them involved in a fun way.
Our school is composed of Pre-K through 5th grade students.
We have 100% free breakfast and lunch. My students are preparing to be successful in a technology driven society. They have goals, dreams, and aspirations for this school year. I know that they can accomplish anything, but it is my hope to make sure they have all the needed resources to do that!
My Project
After the unfortunate way our school year has come to an end I would love to give my students a whole new sense of excitement for learning. For too many of my students, school is their only place to feel safe and given support/ encouragement. Most of my students enter into the 5th grade at a much lower reading level and feel a sense of defeat when it comes to reading before the lesson ever begins. However, engaging my students and giving them a visual always brings a sense of curiosity and excitement to the classroom. Through the props the students will be taken to different worlds simply by looking around the room. They will be taken to space, the sea, on an airplane trip, to the bayou, and on a road trip. As we read our novels they will make the connections that through reading they can travel to any place at any time. I will use the shower curtains and inflatables/cut outs to bring our single classroom into a adventure they will never forget.
I want my students to know through reading they can take an unlimited amount of adventures.
Some of my students have never even left their home town. Through the imagery I can create with the shower curtains and props I will be able to give them a sense of adventure. Then, as we continue in our novels I will show them how literature can take us anywhere in the world or any magical place. The adventures they can take through reading are endless.
