My students need a class set of fiction novels, "Afternoon on the Amazon," to improve literacy. My students also need a class set of non-fictional texts, "Rain Forests," to incorporate reading across the curriculum.
A typical day in my classroom includes working as a whole, individually, and in small groups. We read, sing, chant, count, and write to name a few things. My room is full of color, technology, and discovery.
"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery." ~Mark Van Doren
My classroom is made up of 22 unique second grade boys and girls.
They range in their abilities and each bring life to my room! Our school is located in a rural area. We have around 370 students currently enrolled, grades Pre-K-4. We are a Title I school.
My Project
When this project is funded, my students will use "The Magic Tree House #6" novel as their reading curriculum. We will take a magical adventure into the Amazon Rain Forest, exploring and discovering many new things. The students will draw conclusions and form opinions from reading the text and taking notes. They will then use that information to make a brochure about the Amazon Rain Forest. They will learn new vocabulary and create a Rain Forest Haiku. They will also use the non-fiction component to integrate reading across the curriculum. In science, for example, the students will learn about biomes/habitats: rain forest, climate, water features, animal adaptations (physical and behavioral), animal defenses such as camouflage, food chains: predators and prey, and rain forest preservation. In math, this novel can be correlated by reviewing place value problems, measurement, and graphing. This book will fill the remainder of our school year with much excitement and discovery!
Not only will this project meet Next Gen CSO's, but my intention is to introduce my students to the magic that chapter books have to offer.
I hope this experience will foster a lifetime of reading!
