My students, ages three to five and a half years old, are part of an inclusive pre-kindergarten environment. They live in a multicultural city and for this reason they are very diverse. They are diverse not only in their cultures and ethnic backgrounds, but also in their physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional learning abilities. Our school is part of a Title I district where at least 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
My students' love for learning always amazes me.
They are curious and eager to learn new ideas through play-based, multi-sensory, hands-on activities. As a teacher, I am constantly striving to provide new materials and experiences that will allow them to grow in all areas of development. My ultimate goal is to provide a solid educational foundation and instill in them a lifetime love for learning.
My students are naturally curious and are constantly asking questions and using their senses to understand of the world around them. The materials requested for this project will allow them to get a better understanding that, similar to humans, all living things go through changes as they grow. In particular, they will witness the life cycles of butterflies and plants through their own eyes! Growth and change are very abstract concepts that are difficult for my young students to understand. The Butterflies in the Classroom Kit, with live caterpillars, will give them a real-life experience of the metamorphosis of real butterflies. They will have the opportunity see the caterpillars transform from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. The Mr. Sprout gardening kits will enable the children to plant seeds and observe the changes they go through over time. In addition to helping the children understand the behavior and biology of butterflies and plants, these kits will promote responsibility and teach them the importance of taking care of living things.
This project will allow me to provide experiences and thought provoking materials that will allow my students to co-construct knowledge and engage in the process of inquiry.
Through this process, they will be able to ask questions, make discoveries, and test their discoveries in search of new meaning. Using open-ended art materials, they will be able to document their ideas and thinking. In the classroom, they will paint, draw and create representations of the different stages of the life cycles of butterflies and plants.
