As a Title I, public charter school, STA serves the least affluent in South Florida: over eighty-five percent of the students are on free or reduced price lunch plans. Many are first-generation U.S. citizens and will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. In 2016 alone, STA students earned over six hundred career and industry certifications, positioning them for in-demand careers. Additionally, our students earn Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment credits and our school boasts an outstanding ninety-six percent graduation rate.
Yet, the disparity of opportunity between the economically advantaged and disadvantaged students in South Florida leads to future disparities in high-paying, rewarding careers, requiring distinct skill sets.
At this time, these careers are open only to those who have been educated on the technologies of the future. The need is two-fold: local industries require skilled workers and county residents need stable careers. This initiative fulfills both needs.
My Project
For students today, phones are extensions of their hands, brains and faces. They use them all the time, and are the true experts on them in our society. Meanwhile, they view laptops and desktop computers are fairly old-fashioned. On top of this, our school cannot provide enough for each student to have a computer in their regular classroom.
In order to achieve at a higher level and utilize their love for modern tech, a classroom set of these efficient tablets would benefit our students greatly in our English-language arts classes.
With these tablets, they will be able to work on new projects together utilizing Google Drive and Google Classroom; they will have a world of information at their fingertips that is safely monitored by their teacher; and they will have the freedom and privilege of reading and writing on modern tech that children in more wealthy schools and districts already receive, giving them a necessary boost to bring their education to the 21st century.
