My ELA students are imaginative and fun-loving kids. They are hard-working students who are held to high expectations. They want to succeed and try their best every day. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community. All are emerging readers, and many are ESL learners.
Many of my students face numerous challenges in their lives including hunger, safety, and unstable living situations.
Despite the hardships they are facing at home, they show up at school excited and ready to learn! The desire to learn and love to have fun while they do, in a safe and exciting place, that is my classroom.
My Project
My students love to read and learn about science topics! They are fascinated by the world around them and are eager to explore it. Every time we cover any science topic in reading class, they end up devour any books they can find on the subject! Last week we read the story “Dog-of-the-Sea” and they became fascinated with volcanoes! Every book I had on that topic was off the shelf and making its way through students. With with project, I hope to greatly expand my library to include hot topics such as life science and physics! The books in this project also range in reading levels, making them assessable to a wide range of readers. They will be read during independent reading time and also used as a cross-curricular support of topics covered in science class.
I want my readers to get excited about the natural world and inspire them to explore it!
My wonderful students are voracious readers and have an insatiable appetite for knowledge. These books will feed that, fueling their curiosity and a love of reading. We all know that knowledge is power! Please help me empower my students through these non-fiction books.
