Who says it best? Dr. Seuss, that's who! "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." And in a time such as now, where families are hunkering down and staying home, my students could use more variety of books to read and more "places to go". The majority of my students come from low-income households and many of them have never traveled out of the state of Montana. Books provide the opportunity for my students to travel places they've never been and will probably never go.
Those who love to read know the joys of escaping into a good book, and being a lover of reading myself, it is my responsibility to do all I can to help my twenty-five, fourth graders discover this love, too.
With flourishing readers, comes the demand for more books. Books that will entertain them, make them laugh, make them cry, or take them on adventures far and wide; books that will make them love reading!
My Project
Reading comprehension is crucial to all subject areas. The actual teaching of reading comprehension can only take a student so far. When a student learns to love reading, to create mind movies, goes on the adventure with the characters, that's when reading comprehension has been mastered. That's what I want for my students.
Book variety offers students the chance to find what they enjoy, encouraging the love of reading that can last a lifetime.
The more variety, the more likely it will be that all my students will find the genre they can't get enough of. And when that is found, the fun begins, and the likelihood of becoming a lifelong reader is achieved.
