Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher to the perfect combination of a diverse set of 23 fourth grade students from a high poverty area in Winston-Salem, NC. Each of my students is faced with adversity daily. My students come from all walks of life. Our school receives ninety-six percent free and reduced-priced lunch due to the socioeconomic makeup of our children. Unfortunately, due to the demographic makeup of our students, we have very little parent support towards classroom supplies which negatively affects our classroom support group.
My Project
Adventurous--I've always been drawn to the idea of adventure: going to amazing places, having wondrous experiences, meeting many unique characters, and at the end of it all being able to share a story well outside the realms of everyday life and I want to bring this sense of fun and adventure into my classroom through a camping theme. There's nothing that I enjoyed more as a child than to go camping with my friends. What better way to enjoy camping than in our very own classroom? After recently visiting the Ron Clark Academy, I have decided to transform my classroom and want to create an environment in my classroom that excites students to come to school each day. I want to create an eagerness to learn and for these reasons, I would like to request several tents, sleeping bags, an imitation fireplace, and lanterns. These materials will place a fun spin on reading.
