Our school is a dual enrollment high school for students in grades 11-12, located inside a community college in a Connecticut city. The school prepares a broad spectrum of students to be college and career ready by fostering a nurturing, personalized environment that creates student ownership of their own learning.
Many of these students have struggled in their previous schools, and have entered to us at-risk for dropping out because of their chronic absenteeism, credit deficiencies, and DCF-involvement for family dysfunction, prior behavioral problems.
Our population is 38% minority with 34% of students receiving free/reduced lunch and 33% of the school having a 504 or IEP plan; Our a school-wide chronic absentee rate of 10% with 22% of free/reduced lunch students identified as chronically absent.
As a dual enrollment magnet high school, our school promotes equity and equality by helping students complete graduation requirements while supporting students in college courses they can take at no cost to themselves or their parents. The college has transfer agreements with many four year institutions. This allows our high school students to complete a maximum of two years of college, for free, that they can then transfer to the college of their choice.
My Project
My students have been through a lifetime of experience yet they are only in high school. All of them have left behind friends their previous high schools to transition to our middle college. Some have moved from other countries and had to adapt to life in the US. The majority of them are from low-income households and have part-time jobs.
Your donation will fund the decorations for an international-themed prom that celebrates the diversity of our student body as well as the atmosphere of respect and appreciation found within our unique, heterogeneous school.
Each table at prom represents a region of the world our students hail from, and students will be encouraged to potluck the desserts of their culture to share with their classmates. For example, Fidan, a student who recently came to the United States from Syria, is excited to share her baklava.
By funding the cost of decorations allows the entirety of the money raised by the prom committee to pay for the cost of the food and music as well as for the food and decorations for their graduation a few weeks later.
Research shows that extracurricular programs that build community among students from different walks of life and academic abilities carries over into the classroom, and true equity in education means not only should these programs be reflective of a students' interest and home culture, but they should also be accessible to all students no matter their financial situation. We want to provide a free prom to give students with an opportunity to attend this milestone in their lives without worrying about the cost, shows them that they are at a school that cares about them as people, not just as grades on a report card.
