Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Emerson once wrote, "There comes a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance, that imitation is suicide." At our school, many of my students are shrugging off the peer pressure of mediocrity and grasping on to a heavier, more rigorous AP course load.

Our high school is growing more and more diverse as the years pass.

One of two city schools in the district, it is currently a predominantly minority school with an even mix of Hispanic and African American students. Many of our students are first generation Americans, and some may be the first member of their family to graduate from high school and/or attend college. Our AP courses are filled with students who are seeking the opportunities for higher education, but may lack the funds to do so. Our school has been working to build its AP and Honors program in order to help our students have the best chance at a successful future. We want them to overcome these hindrances to meet their true potential. These students have a thirst for knowledge that is a rarity. While the state of North Carolina has dropped in its education statistics, these students are those who will not let a reputation stop them from accomplishing their dreams and making a difference in the world.

My Project

The AP test can be an intimidating experience for many students. This and financing are the two things that keep many students from taking the AP test and making an attempt to receive credit for a college course while still in high school. Because the Crash Course is clear and concise, students will be able to understand what the course, and thus the AP test, will be asking of them. It will demystify the course for the students and help them understand the tasks and concepts placed in front of them. Students will be able to actively participate in activities that allow them to learn terms, analyze prompts and take creative approaches to AP Composition and Language. In one text, students will have a study guide, a skill builder and dictionary and so many more of the things they will need to succeed in the course. However, the purpose of using this resource is not just to improve test scores, but to help students increase their knowledge and love for the written word.

Education is in danger.

Our students face apathy and obstacles from adults and peers as they seek to better themselves. They see their futures in jeopardy because of situations they cannot control. The AP English Language and Composition Crash Course can help them climb the mountain that leads to their future. It can help them take some control over their present and future. While it will not transport them to the top, it will make their climb just that much easier.
