Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students have a variety of eye diagnoses that can result in vision loss ranging from partially sighted to totally blind. These students are in the 8th to 12th grade and currently participate in Orientation and Mobility Training for the Blind in their respective schools. Orientation and mobility (O&M) instruction focuses on the skills the students need to access the school campus and their community, such as grocery stores and shopping centers, by learning to cross traffic light controlled intersections and take public transportation.
Our students challenge themselves every time they go out!
Time makes a difference in a Blind student’s life. We need monetary assistance to fund this camp to buy food to cook their own meals.
O&M increases safety, independence, confidence, and socially appropriate integration with their sighted peers. Students who receive O&M instruction are pulled out of class at a certain time during the school day. This is limiting to the student because they only have a certain amount of time for their lesson; they may not get the opportunity to use the various modes of public transportation or purchase ingredients to prepare a meal.
My Project
The Orientation and Mobility Advance Skills Training Program is a five-day camp which provides extended lesson opportunities for visually impaired and blind students. The camp takes place before the new school year begins in August. The students are divided into five teams (3-4 students per team) and rotate every day to a new skill. Each skill is taught by a small group of O&M instructors. Students learn to take the train to the beach, travel on the bus to Hollywood, hike trails, explore the mall using technology, and develop a shopping list to purchase items and cook a meal.
Visually Impaired and Blind students want to learn the skills to become independent and productive citizens just like their fellow peers.
As they continue to pursue their goals in higher education, our students learn the skills that they need to integrate with their peers and become independent young adults while also having fun at O&M camp! Please help support our students with grocery items and t-shirts.
