My students need activities that help them blend and segment words into chunks and word families. These larger words will help them as they graduate to each higher reading level.
I teach at a Title I elementary school in South Philadelphia.
My twenty-five kindergarten students are very hard working, respectful, loving, and driven.
They support each other daily through activities, positive praise, and buddy work. Each student learns in a different way, whole group or small group, visual, auditory or kinesthetic means. Each student has a different level of ability in each subject. The goal is to motivate, encourage, and support students through their learning journey. They will become responsible for their own progress. I love being able to create opportunities for my students and show them all of their potential!
My Project
Once Kindergarten students know the basic alphabet, consonant, and vowels they begin to put the letters together. These cluster of letters are called word families, digraphs, blends, and chunks. Blends, digraphs, and word families are all incorporated in larger words.
Students will need to independently decode larger and more intimidating words in order to read on a first-grade reading level.
“Time to Rhyme” will help students to notice word patterns and word families. The students will work independently and with a group to create words and sentences. They will discuss how the words are related and different.
The “Montessori Phonemic Building Blocks” and “Word Wheels” allows students to create hundreds on words by changing the onset (beginning) or time (end of the word). The students will Work in creating 3 letter words before they move onto the “phonics Mats” where they will be introduced to creating and reading words with blends and digraphs.
These activities will provide students with the advanced practice they need to get to their reading level.
Finally, the Interlocking Wire Shelves storage cubes will help organize and store these games and books.
