Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in the heart of the San Fernando Valley and, as a result, are participants in diverse, and unique, cultural experiences within their community. They express a love for reading and an interest in learning beyond what I have experienced when teaching elsewhere.
These are good kids who want the best for themselves, their education and their families.
I want to to be the teacher that helps them reach their goals like the teachers who helped me achieve mine.
My Project
What if your entire life depended on the outcome of a test? (SAT's anyone?) Divergent is a story of one young woman who doesn't fit the test and instead must make a choice: the one and only choice that will dictate how she spends the rest of her life.
I hope to send these 8th graders off to high school prepared to face the tough choices it takes to truly be DIVERGENT in a world that can make them feel mediocre.
Through a literature circle study of this fantasy novel, my 8th graders will come to realize that this fictional, but hard, choice also applies to their very real lives. As they get ready to move on to high school, every choice effects who they become and what opportunities they have. My goal is to give students choice in the novel they read related to our theme: Approaching Adulthood.
Discussion groups, novel study, sharing the reading engages students in ways reading alone doesn't. The reading and connections to the world beyond will become clear as students work toward understanding them together.
