Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A new environment, new expectations, new social opportunities and maybe even a new country... this is what many of my kindergarten bilingual students face each year. Often kindergarten is a place of culture shock! My students not only go through the usual changes, moving from a preschool, daycare, or home environment to a school but now enter a place where they will be learning and developing two languages! For most, their stronger language is Spanish and they are learning English simultaneously. The students' levels range so dramatically in areas of language development, vocabulary, social skills, number and print awareness! Every beginning of the year is shocking to realize how far they need to go. Every end of the year is amazing to see how far they have come!
Students walking into my classroom sometimes have needs so basic it's heartbreaking: food, clothes, a safe environment, a smile, a compliment, a daily routine!
My school is nearly 90% low income with students who eat two meals a day at school. Nearly a third of the school comes from a language background other than English. There is a high disability rate and many homeless students as well.
My Project
My students make such adorable and amazing projects that some parents will keep for years to come! Having thicker laminating pouches protects student work so much better and longer than the school lamination would. A paper cutter will help make supplies for projects and cut student projects nice and neat!
Five-year-old children go through materials like there's no tomorrow!
I make many of our math and literacy games and activities myself. 5mm laminating pouches will help protect these materials so they will not be destroyed within a day! Everything goes into mouths, is bent, twisted, and really put to the test. Yes, materials can be remade, copied and cut again, but using laminating pouches will help me make materials that will last and still look nice for the adorable, smiling faces in my room. A paper cutter will help prepare these games and activities faster, rather than cutting each and every piece by hand.
Something that my students go wild for is a new learning game that is seasonal or holiday themed! It's amazing the renewed motivation of children by changing an addition game from snowflakes to red hearts! Every month I love hearing the "oooh," "aaah" and "WOW" as I roll out the new amazing, shiny materials! Having laminating pouches and a paper cutter will lead to this excitement in the months and years to come!
