Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a district, we have over 8,000 students at home during this time. Our state is, unfortunately, a hot spot for the Coronavirus and many of our students have families who are now on unemployment or essential workers who are working overtime to keep our state and healthcare systems running.
As a high school teacher, I interact with my students every single day online and can see how being away from school has had incredibly social/emotional impacts on all of them.
Each of our classes meets twice a week for regular "class" sessions through Google Meet. I have the afternoon office hours where my Google Meet is live and the students just check-in and say hello or ask questions about the topics. One night a week, for my engineering students, I am holding a Google MEET an Engineer workshop where guest engineers talk with my students on various topics and host a Q&A session afterward. I have 150 students, 55 of whom are seniors.
My Project
I have a wonderful group of students who will need a high-quality laptop for their studies next year. These students are studying Computer Science and need a laptop that has a 1TB hard drive, lots of RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce Video Card.
Our students were all given a Chromebook just before our distance learning started and while those are great for basic things like Internet searches, Google Docs, etc., they are simply not the tool a future Computer Science student needs.
I have had to let students borrow our robotics team programming laptops so we could work from home on various vision processing applications. This project will allow me to take back one of those laptops, give it to an underclassman to use, and give them a new laptop they can bring with them to college.
Thank you so very much for sponsoring one of my amazing FIRST Robotics Challenge team members and giving them the tools they will need to give back to us in the future after they have graduated with a degree in Computer Science.
