Hooray! This project is fully funded

The Napa Valley is a place of beauty and opportunity. My students and I are indeed blessed to live in such a place. However, in a time when budget cuts have virtually eliminated all chance for enrichment to the curriculum I find myself in the difficult position of having to find funding for curriculum-related field trips. I am a 4th and 5th grade teacher in a small rural school in north Napa. Our population is comprised of approximately 47% English Language Learners, and 38% socio-economically disadvantaged students. Therefore, although our students live in one of the most affluent areas of the state, they have little opportunity to participate in the rich events for which our valley is known. In my quest to offer enrichment opportunities to my students, I have created a project that integrates our science curriculum and their inherent curiosity about wild animals. The Adopt-a-Species Project allows my students to take what they've learned about endangered biomes, or habitats, and investigate how different environmental factors affect the animals that live in them. My students will be studying various biomes, including The African Savannah. The purpose behind this request is to take a field trip to a local wild life park, Safari West, which preserves African animal species in a replica of their natural environment. The students will take a “walking safari” through the park with a guide who will educate them on various species indigenous to Africa, much like a naturalist does at science camp. The project will include adopting an animal, as a class, from the preserve. The information we receive on that animal will be used for a research project the students will complete about the species to investigate the reasons it has become endangered and the steps that we, as a class, can take to help protect it. Safari West is near Santa Rosa, only 45 minutes from Napa, yet its cost is quite prohibitive for our students. We would also like the students in our class to be able to adopt a species, which includes information about the animal. Our school PTA will pay the transportation costs. We are requesting funds for the cost of the tickets and the adoption. We thank you for your consideration.
