Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a seventh grade teacher who loves to take my students outside for adventures in natural areas in Chicago. Our visits to neighborhood parks, nature centers, and the Chicago River have three aims. First, students observe, analyze, and assess the area followed by writing and drawing to describe their findings. Next, students participate in stewardship activities to emphasize their connection and responsibility to natural areas. Finally, they relax and enjoy nature with their friends by sharing lunch and playing team-building games.
This year the seventh graders are participating in Friends of the Chicago River "Adopt-A-River" program. We are committed to test the water quality at least two times during the school year at our river site. Further, we will work with the Chicago Park District to perform stewardship tasks at our river site.
Students will be using Green Water Monitoring Kits to test the water for fecal coliform, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrates, and phosphates. These kits also require students to use timers at the field sites. A second component of monitoring is observing and recording what lives at the site. Pond Life Golden Guides provides excellent descriptions and drawings of organisms living along rivers.
During our field investigations students will learn about the intricate connectedness between the water, land, and the organisms that live in the river habitat. They also will be able to make a difference by participating in stewardship activities. Finally, they will learn about natural areas in the city and hopefully feel a connection to them.
