Help me give my students the materials to make Goody Bags for Assisted Living residents. The gifts will enable them to serve the community in a significant way.
My Students are participating in an ADOPT A GRANDPARENT Club at our middle school. The children are making cards for Thanksgiving to give the Assisted Living residents when we visit in November. However, for Christmas or Valentines Day, we would like to create Goody Bags for the residents, filled with useful items and treats.
I want my students to be proud of who they and aware of the significant contributions they can make now to improve their communities.
Through awareness of the unique obstacles of the elderly in our society, my students will be equipped to make positive choices in the future. They will learn empathy for others and possibly appreciate their own circumstances better.
Our students come from predominantly single parent homes and most live at or below the poverty level, so opportunities for community service are rare. We have a dedicated, highly professional faculty, yet "extra" materials to enhance empathy and tolerance projects are not available for our club. Most teachers write grants and/or spend their own funds in order to facilitate the "extras" for our children. We have super, awesome students at our school who are excited to visit and give to an assisted living community!
My Project
In our ADOPT A GRANDPARENT club, we emphasize the needs of the elderly, the opportunity to make a difference in an older person's life, and while participating, become aware of our community needs through empathetic service.
Visiting and creating Goody Bags for residents in an assisted living home require funds for purchasing the items we need.
We will stuff the bags with toiletries, activity books, pens, notepads, handkerchiefs, stuffed animals, and treats. Then we will deliver the gifts to the residents, hopefully for Christmas.
All too often our elderly are ignored by their families and friends. They thrive when special visitors come to the home to talk, play games, and recognize that there are those in their community who care.
