Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a sixth and seventh grade English Language Arts teacher at an elementary school in the South Bronx. In all, I teach 56 students during the course of a day. The students I teach are extremely under privileged children that deserve to see and experience the world that exists inside books. I wish that I had the money to provide my students with a great variety of books, but unfortunately that is not the case.
I would love for my classroom to be filled with all different types of books that teenagers would find interesting. I want them to have the feeling of not being able to put a book down instead of feeling forced into reading. I know that my students love the Bluford Series books, but we have very few of them available. The copies that we do have need to be shared among the middle school classes, making them quite hard to come by.
Basically, I would just love for my classroom to have a variety of different types of books that will fill my shelves, inviting students to go over and choose books to read. I would love for the books to include mysteries, animals, coming of age issues, sports, science fiction, etc. I really appreciate this opportunity to try and help my students to get the books that will make reading fun again.
