My students need an iPad mini to enhance and contribute to their reading and mathematics instruction. They also need a protective cover to maintain the technology.
I am a special education teacher in an ICT classroom. I have 29 students, 10 of which are students with special needs. Each day, their love of learning and laughter encourages me to continue to find new ways to make them excited about learning. This can be challenging with limited resources.
I teach in a high poverty area in which there is often minimal support at home.
I have to make every minute count when my students are at school. Many of them, especially those with special needs, are below grade level in both reading and math. They benefit when they have multiple resources to assist them during lessons. Often times this is challenging because resources are limited or out of date. They have many interests and find what is available to them boring. In turn, they quickly become uninterested and discouraged. When they are able to use new resources, especially technology, their love of reading and mathematics is enhanced and motivation becomes captivating. My goal is to create life-long learners who are constantly seeking out new challenges.
My Project
Throughout the day I aim to use technology to enhance their understanding. Students with special needs often benefit from visual aids and support. For example, during small group instruction I use pictures to help define unknown or unfamiliar words when text evidence and prior knowledge is not enough. This allows me to enhance the comprehension of my students and increase their independent abilities. In addition, I will have students use the many educational apps that are available including games, practice tests, personalized leveled reading and other supports. There are endless possibilities! My students lack access to technology at home so they need these things in my classroom. The iPad will be used in some cases as a motivational tool and become a reward for achieving progress whether it is individual or as a class. Having an iPad and case in my classroom will create a new, exciting way for students to continue their learning in a fun way.
