Students today are nothing like the students of yesteryear. Instead, constantly surrounded by computers, cell phones, TV's, iPads, and many other gadgets designed to make life simpler, they live in a high pace, technology based world. However, coming from a small community, many of my students do not have opportunities to experience new technology outside of the classroom and are struggling to keep up.
The 23 2nd and 3rd grade students in my classroom are loving, active, energetic, and nothing short of amazing!
Being in a split level class can be challenging at times, but they meet every single day with enthusiasm and excitement, ready to learn! Tilden Hogge Elementary is a very small Title I (100% free lunch qualified) school of only 208 K-5th grade students, nestled in a small, rural, often forgotten about, portion of the county. We may be small, but we are mighty! We support, love, and encourage one another because in the classroom, and the entire school as a whole, we are a family.
My Project
I am requesting a Chromebook to add to and enhance our classroom learning environment. Our school currently has one class set of Chromebooks, which are shared throughout all of the classrooms in the school. When we get to use them in our classroom, my students LOVE them! They are small, light, and easy to transport throughout the classroom where learning can take place wherever is most comfortable for the student. However, as we have to share with the entire school and only have a handful available at one time, we are limited in what we can do with them.
By adding additional Chromebooks to our classroom, I will be able to reach more students at the same time, as we research, write, take virtual field trips, interact with our Google Classroom interface, and increase our overall learning capacity.
In addition, increasing technological competency and building a background in computers are skills that they will be able to use the rest of their lives.
